Lockheed U-2A 56-6700 is pictured above as it prepares to depart for the last time from Laughlin AFB to the new home of the 4028th Strategic Reconnaissance Weather Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. This aircraft built, under contract SP-1914, was delivered to the Air Force in March 1957 at Groom Lake, but was transferred to the CIA from June 1957 until returned to SAC in the fall of 1960. By October 1966, it had been converted to the U-2C and was placed in "Flyable Storage" in 1969. Converted to the ALSS configuration in 1972, and flown until May 1975, this aircraft was written-off in an accident over Germany. Major Halloran was the 71st (30th USAF) pilot to check out in the U-2A aircraft. He later flew SR-71s and retired as a Major General with a vast knowledge of "very high altitude flight".
